Depicted is a Macedonian phalanx from the 4th - 1st century BC armed with the typical sarissas. The sarissa was a spear with a wooden shaft that was used by Macedonian and Hellenistic armies from the 4th century BC until the subjugation of the Diadochi kingdoms by the Romans. Its length of up to six metres made it an essential element of the Macedonian phalanx.
